Serius - Pommel Horse : Most Useless Olympic Event?

The Most Useless Olympic Event ever?

The Pommel Horse would probably be one of my least favourite Olympic events. I seriously have no idea what is the allure of this “sport”. This is an actual conversation I had with a friend while watching a pommel horse clip on Youtube

“Dude what is the point of this sport”
“If I may take a guess... its pretending that your are paralysed from the waist down and showing off how strong your arms are”
“Makes sense to me”
“It’s either that or they pretend that the pommel horse is coated with broken glasses and they try hard not to get their balls and legs sliced open”
“That would probably make watching this sport more exiting”
“Honestly I dunno what’s the point. I’m just making things up”
“Well dude, I think they are pretending to be helicopters or doing Chun Li’s Spinning Bird Kick!”
“Ha Ha Ha!”
wtf is this shiz?
Balls must not touch!

But honestly. What is the point of pommel horse? Javelin is a sport derived from spear throwing skill of the ancient warriors. Same goes to archery, discus, hammer throw and wrestling. You can actually see real world application of the skills mastered through these events. The same can't be said about pommel horse. Even if you are the champion of pommel horsing, what would this skill be good for other than people telling you “pommel horsing is bloody gay!”

Despite my hatred I always find myself watching this event when it’s on the telly. It never fail to make me me laugh due to its sheer stupidity. But what I don’t get it how come the sport barely evolves after all these years. There are virtually no new moves or variations from one competitor to another. I saw some new moves on the High Bar event earlier today. A Ukrainian dude did a “double no hander back flip 360” before dismounting ( if this was the X-Games, they would probably call this move “The West Side Suicide 360” or some other ridiculous name – Gotta love the X-Games!) . That looked awesome. He could probably use that skill to be a ninja once he retired from the sport. But I haven’t seen any new skill in pummel horse since I first saw it over two decades ago. I saw more innovation per year in Motor-X for the X-Games than in pommel horse.

Maybe they should redesign the apparatus. Since the whole event is boring with limited amount of transitions, why not put more than one pommel horse at once? I name this new apparatus the crucible. This way the gymnasts are encourage to make nifty transitions from one hand grip to another

crucible of doom

They could also put tow pommel horses together and pretty much get the same thing. Maybe make the other one lower than the other just like in the Uneven Bar event. Why the hell not since as I said earlier pommel horse is boring as hell

crucible of doom

If all else fail please take into consideration this one final recommendation

Allow women to have a pommel horse event. I don’t have to explain why but I guess all the men with raging hormones would instantly find pommel horse an “exciting” event all of a sudden! HA HA HA.

Which brings us to the final question. Why is there no pommel horse event for women in the first place? The same thing goes to why is there no male event for balance beam? Weird. I thought the Olympics is all about gender equality? I guess I'm wrong. Happy Olympics to all!

win
balance beam - 100 time more exciting than pommel horse

I agree with u obe that this particular sport doesnt evolve. Even the boring parallel bar produces new moves every now and then

  3. apparently the pummel horse was used by ancient soldiers to practice horse mounting and dismounting. i guess today's pummel horse is just an embellishment of the previous one, with added touch of gymnastics. in other words, it's just a sport of art, like gymnastics.

  4. Or why not just make the sport to be on actual horse, let's see how they flip and turn while the horse gallops towards the sunset

  9. It is not useless until you yourself try it..You think you have strong arms to carry your body and do such spins and bare the dizzy effect while doing it?If yes you must be good or a liar..For me I still can't believe that Squash is not in the Olympics...I don't care much about Gymnastics.
